Ambul Thiyal (Sri Lankan Sour Fish Curry)


Sri Lanka is very famous for its unique way of preparing sour fish curry which is famous as “Ambul Thiyal”. This dish is very famous in down south as the south people of Sri Lanka has the unique way of preparing this delicious dish. Let’s see the simplest way of preparing the dish. 👇

 

 

Ingredients:

  • 500g Tuna/ Thilapiya fish slices
  • Sliced green chilies
  • 1/2 teaspoon of turmeric powder
  • One tablespoons of garlic paste
  • Three tablespoons of gamboge paste
  • Curry leaves
  • Salt

Instructions:

  1. Wash the fish slices.
  2. Take a clay bowl and put garlic paste, gamboge paste, ½ tablespoon of turmeric powder and salt as required.
  3. Then add some water and mix all the ingredients well to make a pulp.
  4. Next add the washed fish slices to this mixture and mix well.
  5. Take another clay bowl and lay curry leaves at the bottom of the bowl and then put the mixed fish slices and the rest of the mix in to the bowl.
  6. Then add green chilies and two tablespoons of water to the bowl.
  7. Let it simmer for about 20 of minutes until the fish is cooked and the gravy is thick.
  8. Turn fish slices once or twice, but do not stir too much to avoid breaking the fish slices.
  9. Serve with steamed rice or bread.
  10. You can add ingredients as per your preference and taste.
